These steps are for ChatGPT on the web and Claude chat, not Codex or Claude Code.

Connect ChatGPT

Use ChatGPT on the web. Account and workspace permissions, including Lockdown restrictions, control whether custom MCP servers can be added and used.

  1. In Plugins, use the plus button and choose Add custom MCP server.
  2. Name it Go Read, add a description, and paste the Server URL below under Connection. Choose OAuth authentication; use the discovered configuration.
  3. Review the risk notice, acknowledge it, then select Create as a plugin. Complete Go Read authorization when prompted (see below).
  4. Find the resulting plugin in your personal plugins or workspace and install it. Start a new conversation, type @, and select Go Read before sending the book prompt below.

Use the Go Read connection configured for your chosen assistant. ChatGPT and Claude each need their own Go Read connection; Go Watch and the phone library do not authorize either one. Authorization opens On Sees Account in your browser. Sign in with the configured owner's Google account and review the Go Read connection and its requested permissions. Reading allows journal lookup; optional writing allows confirmed journal changes. Leave writing off for this lookup. Choose only the permissions you want for this assistant connection, then allow access to return to your assistant. Allowing the connection does not approve a journal change.

Try your first book lookup

Use Go Read to find Circe by Madeline Miller and show me the English edition and cover.

Expect the title, author, a verified English edition, a cover or cover link, and an Open Library source link. If the match is unclear, the assistant may ask a follow-up question.

This lookup does not save a book. With writing allowed, ask Go Read to prepare an addition, reread, edit or deletion. Review the exact preview, then send a separate NEW approval message before it saves. Changed details need a fresh preview and new approval. Ratings and finished dates are optional and come from you. In the phone library, editing uses one Save and deletion uses one Delete action. New books are added through your assistant. Offline browsing and custom widgets remain future work.

I cannot find the custom connector option

Check that you are using the web/chat surface described above and the intended account or workspace. ChatGPT workspace policy may block custom MCP servers. Claude Free has a one-connector limit; Team and Enterprise may need an authorized admin to add it. Ask your workspace admin if the option is restricted.

Authorization fails, or the wrong Google account appears

Only the configured Go Read owner has access. Choose that Google account during sign-in and retry from the assistant's connection settings. The Hub cannot grant journal access. Never paste passwords, tokens or client secrets into a chat.

The connection exists but is disconnected

Open the existing Go Read entry and use Connect to finish authorization. In the recorded ChatGPT test, creation showed an error even though the plugin existed; opening that entry worked. Check for an existing entry before creating a duplicate. Retry authorization if it has expired or been revoked.

Go Read is connected but the assistant does not use it

In ChatGPT, install the plugin, start a new conversation, and select it with @. In Claude, enable Go Read through + → Connectors for that chat and approve requested lookup calls. Then resend the prompt naming Go Read.

The cover is a link instead of an image

Open the exact Open Library cover link returned by Go Read. Inline cover rendering depends on the assistant and may be unreliable. Ask for the original cover link or placeholder and source link; do not substitute a generated or searched image.

The assistant cannot save my book

A lookup never saves. Check that you deliberately allowed writing for this assistant connection. Ask Go Read to prepare the addition, reread, edit or deletion, review its exact preview, then send a separate NEW approval message. Corrections need a fresh preview and approval; a tool Allow is not that approval. If the book already exists, Go Read will not add it again automatically. Phone-library edits use one Save; deletion uses one Delete.

Shared On Sees Account connections still need separate setup and owner consent, starting with ChatGPT, then Claude. A working phone library does not verify either assistant connection. This guide does not test or detect your connection.
